Held in December 8th

Strike

It protests against the wrong policies formulated by the central government and ignores the interests of the traditional textile industry.

ArakkanBalan, the convener of the joint action committee, said that about 500 thousand of the workforce faced a crisis due to shortage of raw materials and rising yarn prices.

The committee called for the end of yarn exports, the acquisition of cotton by the government and the allocation of cotton.

The committee also asked to stop exporting cotton and cotton yarn and abandon the 5 billion 380 million rupee loan until March 31, 2007.

The committee also asked for the recovery of the product tax rebate.

Cotton prices in one year were adjusted from 24500 rupees to 48500 rupees.

The price of yarn has been adjusted from 590 rupees to 880 rupees.

As the central government allows cotton exports to other countries, without considering the needs of India's domestic market, cotton prices have risen sharply.

Kerala exported about 2 billion 600 million rupee textile products in 2009. Because of the rising cotton prices, this year's exports decreased to 2 billion 200 million rupees.

The high price of cotton yarn is hitting India's textile industry.

The power looms and Handlooms companies in private and cooperative sectors are in crisis.

Textile exporters in the region have been hit most, but they are gradually recovering from the most severe economic crisis.

The joint action committee of handlooms and power looms has decided to stop production in December 8th to seek intervention by the central government.
