In the 2009 fiscal year, cotton prices in Pakistan have surged 17%, with an average price of 3250-3500 rupees /maund (40.60-43.74 US dollars) because the market expects the total volume of cotton to arrive is reduced.

According to industry sources, because of the high cotton prices in the domestic market, textile mills prefer to import cotton. They hope to stop shrinking profits under the pressure of reduced sales orders.

The latest information released by the Pakistan cotton Processors Association (PCGA) shows that in February 28th, 2009, the total volume of cotton arrived was 11 million 221 thousand packages.

The expected volume of cotton production in fiscal year 2009 is expected to be around 11 million 500 thousand packages, compared with 11 million 400 thousand last year, 5% less than the government revised target 12 million 100 thousand package.

Recent figures from the Federal Bureau of statistics show that textile exports in Pakistan declined by 4% in the first 7 months of fiscal year 09 (January to January), according to the US dollar (July).
